2018 Summer Movie Preview: 12 movies that you should check out

                                                               By Tom Pacak

Avengers: Infinity War (April 27th)- Ok maybe I’m cheating summer movies usually start in May but Marvel kicks off the summer season with “Avengers: Infinity War.” The film is already being predicted to have the highest grossing opening weekend for a film with an estimate $235 million to $255 million. The Avengers are back this time to stop their biggest enemy Thanos (Josh Brolin) from getting all of those Infinity Stones. With new comers joining the Avengers assemble (Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians), expect fireworks from this bad boy!!

Tully (May 4th)- Juno pair director Jason Reitman and Academy-Award winning screenwriter Diablo Cody reunite with “Tully.” The film follows a young mother Marlo (Charlize Theron) who is gifted a night nanny Tully (Mackenzie Davis) to watch over her children of three. At first hesitant, Marlo slowly starts to build a friendship with the nanny. I will be seeing the film next Thursday at a special screening at the Cedar Lee so I’ll keep you posted on the final verdict.

Deadpool 2 (May 18th) - Everybody’s favorite R-rated Marvel antihero is back! This time Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is on a new mission to form a team of mutants called the X-Force. The X-Force is set on protecting a mysterious young mutant from a time-traveling soldier named Thanos, oh, I mean Cable (Josh Brolin).  With newcomers Julian Dennison, Terry Crews, and Bill Skarsgard (yes, Pennywise the clown) joining the cast, you can count me in on this one!!

Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25th)- The Star Wars universe steps up to the plate Memorial Day weekend with “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Set 10 years before “A New Hope”, the film follows a young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and his adventures with Chewbacca. Some of those adventures consist of Han learning from his mentor criminal Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) and Hans encounter with smuggler on the rise Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino). Directed by Ron Howard, the film is described as a space western. This will either be the best space western to come out this year or the worst. You decide!

Action Point (June 1st)- Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew are wild animals! Those boys will do about anything. I swear they would be willing to do the Saw Traps for fun and pleasure. Following the same narrative of “Bad Grandpa”, Johnny Knoxville plays crackpot owner D.C. He runs an out-of-control amusement park called “Action Point.” Action Point has less safety but more fun. Having competition with another amusement park, D.C. must do everything he can to save his park and keep his relationship with his estranged daughter Boogie. Knoxville never fails at amusing me, lets pray that the film like the amusement park is more fun and less safe.

Hereditary (June 8th)- Being a huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival, “Hereditary” is looking to be the breakout horror movie of the summer. The film is about a wealthy family who after the head matriarch of the family passed, they soon suspect that the matriarch left an evil force to haunt them. The force soon has a weird focus on the teenage granddaughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro). Exploring the evil presence, the family soon discovers terrifying secrets about the family’s history. With “A Quiet Place” being a box office and critical smash, “Hereditary” is likely to continue the streak of successful horror films.

Oceans 8 (June 8th)- In this spinoff following Steven Soderbergh’s successful Oceans trilogy, Sandra Bullock plays Debbie Ocean the sister of Danny Ocean. She assembles a crew of other robbers (Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter) to pull off a perfect heist at New York City’s annual Met Gala. The men sit out this round. “Oceans 8” is already expecting to have multiple cameos from Matt Damon and Carl Reiner reprising their roles from the original trilogy and Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner as guests of the gala. This is what summer movies are all about!!

Incredibles 2 (June 15th)- Summer is continuing to be the summer of sequels and superheroes. “Incredibles 2” picks off where the film ended, with the introduction of a new evil villain The Underminer (John Ratzenberger). The family struggles with living a normal family life, being superheroes, and discovering the superpowers of their baby Jack-Jack. With Academy Award winning director Brad Bird returning to the chair, expect the same jokes and fun stunts that made the original a classic.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (June 22nd)- Not learning a thing from the original Jurassic Park trilogy or “Jurassic World”, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” shows the same dumb people trying to bring dinosaurs to civilization. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprise their roles but this time try to save the dinosaurs from a volcano that will destroy Isla Nublar. With Jeff Goldblum coming back to warn everybody about chaos theory, the film is likely to have tons of chaos induced moments!

Under the Silver Lake (June 22nd)- David Robert Mitchell hits back after his successful “It Follows” with “Under the Silver Lake.” Andrew Garfield plays Sam, a young man who soon becomes a detective when a neighbor he has fallen in love with goes missing. Once he starts investigating, he comes across a huge conspiracy that might be bigger than he is. With David Robert Mitchell being two for two with good movies, “Under the Silver Lake” is likely going to make him go three for three!! The poster on this movie is sweet BTW!

Sorry to Bother You (July 6th)- Rapper Boots Riley, gets behind the camera with his directorial debut “Sorry to Bother You.” This WHF premise follows a young black telemarketer Cassius Green (the always strange Lakeith Stanfield) who finds the key to success in the telemarketing business by having a “white voice.” This strange science fiction comedy was a hit at Sundance. Brian Tallerico critic for RogerEbert.com described it as “There’s nothing safe about Boots Riley's film-nothing predictable, nothing derivative or generic, nothing routine. It is what we want from Sundance in that it's a confrontational, unforgettable announcement of a new talent.” For all of those sick of the superheroes and sequels, this is one to check out.

Mission: Impossible- Fallot (July 27th)- Tom Cruise is amazing. This bad-ass actor at 55 can still do the same dangerous stunts he was doing when he was 30. The Mission Impossible crew is back at it in the sixth film added to the franchise. Not much has been said about the plot but expect Ethan is on the run from bad guys again and that he’ll do dangerous stunts to avoid them. This is the perfect escapism that summer always needs. If the plot and stunts are too dumbed down for you, wait for fall when Oscar season comes around.
