Opinion Piece: Disney Screwed Up By Firing James Gunn

By Tom Pacak

America had a rough week. With President dumbass choosing Russia over America, Trumpers defending him, and Mark Duplass getting crap for liking a conservative commentator. This week needs to end! On top of that, yesterday, director James Gunn was fired from Disney for stupid tweets that he posted ten years ago. The tweets were jokes about pedophilia and rape. I think any sane person will admit that it’s weird for a 40-year-old man to make these unfunny jokes. But what Disney and a bunch of altright trolls did was wrong.

Look, I am actually a huge fan of what James Gunn has done in the film industry. I think the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films are hilarious. He truly has a unique style that’s hard to dismiss. He’s also is willing to call out the current bullshit that’s going on in our administration. He uses quick wit and facts to get his point across. Gunn clearly loves his country and film.

He's also a weirdo. All you need to do is watch his 2006 zombie-comedy “Slither” to know that. I knew he was a weirdo and so did Disney. These gross tweets are from ten years ago; please don’t tell me Disney didn’t know about them. They knew that Gunn was this super edgy hit-and-miss funny man just like they knew Roseanne was a racist and that Victor Salva was a convicted pedophile. The difference is James Gunn shouldn’t be lumped in with the awful people I just listed. I truly believe that James Gunn is a good person. Back in 2012, he apologized and said he regretted his jokes. Making him apologize again and derailing his career is silly.

Pic above is of James Gunn horror flick "Slither."

The breakdown of where these tweets also resurfaced is the definition of irony. So two losers, Mike Cernovich and Jack Poesbiec, who have never gotten laid and live in their parent’s basement, got sick of being wrong all the time. So, what did they do? They decided to dig back years ago to find stupid unfunny tweets that James Gunn posted. To act like these two useful douchebags actually care about human decency and sexual assault is outrageous. They’re both known Nazi sympathizers.  Plus, Mike Cernovich has bragged about sexual abuse on Twitter.

In conclusion, this was all a big smear campaign to destroy somebody’s career because of political disagreements. Cernovich and Poesbiec aren’t heroes, they’re cowards. If you really have a problem with somebody's beliefs, debate them. I have several Republican friends who I issue disagreements on. And when Disney fired James Gunn, they gave these losers a purpose. Mob mentality is very toxic and companies shouldn’t cave into it.

We as Americans should not engage in smear campaigns because of political disagreements. I saw on Twitter earlier that people are trying to dig up stupid tweets that Ben Shapiro has tweeted in the past. Stop it! This is dumb and a waste of time. People change. I don’t share the same beliefs I did ten years ago. A lot of people believe that people never change. I see it all the time when somebody will explain how they hate somebody else because he/she was an asshole ten years ago. Give the person the benefit of the doubt and see if that person has changed. Quit assuming that people don’t change. Is your life so sad that your only source that somebody is an asshole is past tweets?

I really hope James Gunn finds work in the future. He seems like a down-to-earth guy who tweeted some dumb jokes.
